It is a truism of our region that about the biggest challenge we face as residents of Prince George’s County is living with a school system that performs poorly compared to almost all of our neighbors. This situation causes difficulties for us all that range far beyond simply trying to insure that our own children receive an education adequate to giving them a chance at a bright future. Among other things it undermines: 1) our property values; 2) opportunities to attract commercial investment and the jobs that go with it; and 3) leaves us incessantly beholding to state regulators and politicians who too often see our county as lacking. The annual town budget proposal I send to the council is probably the most significant single action I take in a year as mayor. This will be delivered to council and publicly available no later than May 1. It must be balanced with revenues equaling expenditures. Looking at the big picture of town services that we all depend on daily and what they cost in total, my proposal will hold no significant change. However this budget will include some important initiatives that should positively impact the town for years to come. Read more....
